Costing around 17 Guineas each (£17.85 for computer-age kids) they were alleged to improve a labourer's work output by up to 300%. This was because the hardest part of shifting heavy loads, mainly sacks, from A to B was actually lifting the sack off the floor at the start of the journey. So a "lad" was employed to drag the sack onto the lifter then wind it up to shoulder height for the labourer to collect. Relatively easy work for the "lad" and for the labourer the hardest part of the job was removed - hence the dramatic improvement in his efficiency. 17 Guineas represented about 7 weeks wages for a labourer. Today a similar stacker costs around 2 weeks "labourer's" wages. What great value in these days of "Manual Handling Regulations"! Could you improve your "labourer's" output by up to 300%?
