FORK SAFETY GUIDE

FORK SAFETY GUIDE

Fork Safety Guide

Ensuring the safety and longevity of forklift forks is crucial for efficient and secure material handling operations. This guide outlines essential practices to maintain fork integrity and comply with safety standards.

Key Fork Safety Practices

  1. Use Both Forks: Always lift loads using both forks. Never lift a load with just one fork, whether partial or full.
  2. Regular Inspections: Conduct visual inspections before each use. Replace damaged forks immediately.
  3. Observe Rated Capacity: Adhere to the forklift's rated capacity and load center specifications to prevent tipping hazards.
  4. Avoid Lateral Loads: Forks are not designed for side loads. Do not raise loads diagonally or push laterally.
  5. Proper Use with Attachments: Do not use standard forks on rotators or upside down. Specialized forks are required for such applications.
  6. Prevent Load Drops: Ensure loads are secure to prevent them from falling onto the forks.
  7. Handle Materials Safely: Do not transport hot molten materials or allow personnel to ride on the forks.
  8. Secure Locking Devices: Ensure fork locking devices are engaged during operation to prevent forks from slipping off.
  9. Avoid Overloading Tips: Do not lift loads using only the fork tips, as this can cause overloading and damage.
  10. Expert Inspections: Schedule regular expert inspections, including crack detection, to maintain fork safety.
  11. Match Fork Size to Load: Longer forks should have a larger cross-section to handle increased loads safely.
  12. No Unauthorized Modifications: Do not modify forks, including welding or drilling, as this can compromise structural integrity.
  13. Replace Worn Forks: If fork thickness is reduced by 10%, replace them immediately, as this indicates a 20% loss in load-bearing capacity.
  14. Manufacturer Repairs: Only the manufacturer should repair bent or damaged forks to ensure safety standards are met.
  15. Replace Forks in Pairs: If one fork is damaged, replace both to maintain balance and safety.
